LTP surface renovation and maintenance products have been used to carry out a historic marble floor restoration at UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Roman Baths in Somerset. The project, carried out by floor restoration and cleaning experts, Green Man, included an extensive area of original marble flooring throughout the Prom Corridor. Green Man also carried out restoration works to modular carpet and bespoke oriental style rugs within The Pump Room, Kingston Room and Drawing Room.
Constructed in around 70AD in the city of Bath, the Roman Baths is one of the best-preserved Roman remains in the world. It was built as a grand bathing ‘thermae’ and socialising complex and 1,170,000 litres of steaming spring water, reaching 46°C, still fills the bathing site every single day. Works to restore flooring were carried out over night by Green Man’s team of six technicians, with the majority of the works completed in a single night.
The decorative marble flooring, laid throughout various corridors within the upper Roman Baths’ complex, comprised several different types of white, black and brown stone. Tiles were coated with an aging topical seal previously applied to create a durable, reflective surface. Scratched and dulled over time, the finish and marble tiles were surveyed by Green Man and LTP Solvex – a high performance, non-caustic stripper – was specified to remove the seal. A weighted rotary machine was then used to remove the softened coating and residue was lifted using commercial wet vacs. Tiles were then cleaned with LTP Grimex deep cleaner.
Once the marble floor was dry, six coats of LTP Ironwax Gloss were applied over a series of nights; the self-shine acrylic sealer enhances colour and texture, protects against staining and stubborn dirt and promotes easy maintenance.
“This is likely to be the most walked upon floor we ever treat, so it was imperative to get the finish right. LTP Solvex and Ironwax Gloss provided the perfect combination, safely restoring and renewing the precious marble’s lustre and protection,” explained Green Man’s Jon Gardner.
Ongoing maintenance will now include interim mopping using LTP Floorshine, which helps to reinforce protection on surfaces sealed with LTP Ironwax Gloss.
